Welcome to maxandharry’s tour diaries! Here we explore our journey as a company through chapters, all of which are about the people we have met and worked with along the way.
The Sample Answer Tour (Full Length Feature Coming Soon)
One autumn day in 2015, Harry and I met whilst going on tour with Sample Answer in support of the Fratellis. We had both worked with the singer-songwriter at different points in our career but it was this three day excursion up to Glasgow and Birmingham, then back down to London that brought us together.
The love of music can capture anybody’s heart and soul. I first came across this big afro’ed guy at Pete Doherty’s comeback gig in Brixton Jamm, with veins sticking out of the side of his neck, pouring his soul into the microphone. What was his name? I did not know. All I did know was that I liked his style. Fast forward three months, and a friend who had also seen Pete’s gig sends me a YouTube video titled, ‘Good Boy’ by Sample Answer.
Working in a music magazine, I had the perks of the job filming at the beautiful Latitude festival. The weekend was sunny and it had the music to match. It came to the last piece of content creation, in which my chief editor said, ‘I have a present for you. We’ve got a your boy Sample Answer for a session.’ The first thing I replied was, ‘let’s get him on the gondola,’ to which the response was, ‘Good luck!’
It was here I shot one of my favourite videos to date. Sample Answer, also known as Maurice O’Connor, was a laid back dude, and seemed extremely grateful for the session. I kept in contact with Maurice, giving him updates on our release for his video. This is when he invited me to come and document his first UK tour supporting Scottish indie band the Fratellis.
This is when I was introduced to Max, a broad shouldered, well-spoken Amish looking guy (his terrible beard at the time) and our first conversation was talking about the Zoom H4N audio recorder. For a so called audio expert he knew nothing about it!
